CLIL: an overview

CLIL stands for Content Language Integrated Learning. What does that mean? It means studying a language (English, in our case) and learning about a subject like science, biology, history, etc. at the same time. Any time someone learned about something else — science, art, sports — while they used and practiced a foreign language, they were using CLIL even if they didn’t realize it!

Different centers have different programs and their own individual goals. But all CLIL programs aim to increase students’ subject-area knowledge while at the same time improving their knowledge and skills in the foreign language used.

Our center uses a cross-curricular program that’s integrated in our support materials (books). The term can be explained as follows: applying knowledge, principles, and values to more than one discipline at the same time. Basically, students use their new-found knowledge in a familiar context – for example food vocabulary used in the context of reading or writing a recipe; using the modal verb must when talking about road safety.

Throughout the school year, our main goal is for students to acquire the English language skills, vocabulary and grammar, use them in appropriate contexts, and then be able to sustain an exam to prove their progress. Of course, the cross-curricular parts make it better because it adds a different dimension to our teaching and they can practice their language acquisition in a day-to-day life context.

During summer school, our aim shifts to improving students’ ability to not only use the English language skills and knowledge they have, but also improve their general knowledge of the world. And thus, the CLIL program emerges.

Biology, physics, geography, history, art – all of these subjects brings something new to the language acquisition, as well as general knowledge acquisition. Discussions, graphs, presentations – they are all part of our summer school program along with diversity, fun and learning.
